Staying in Brigg
Brigg is a small market town in North Lincolnshire, set on the River Ancholme between Scunthorpe and the Lincolnshire Wolds, and its main claim to fame is its fair. The old Brigg horse fair gave its name to the folk song "Brigg Fair", collected by Percy Grainger and later turned into an orchestral rhapsody by Frederick Delius, so the town punches well above its size in English music history. Archaeology buffs may also know it for the Bronze Age Brigg Logboat, unearthed nearby.
The compact centre, with its market place and riverside, is pleasant enough for an hour's wander, and regular street markets keep it lively. There is not much here to fill a holiday, and most visitors are passing through on business in Scunthorpe or the Humber ports, heading to Humberside Airport, or using it as a base for the Wolds. Accommodation is limited to a handful of options. Stay in or near the town centre, where you can walk to pubs, shops and the river rather than relying on a car.
