Buckingham is a small market town in north Buckinghamshire, best known as the former county town before Aylesbury took over the role, and for lending its name to the palace rather than having any grand connection to it. The University of Buckingham, Britain's smallest and one of its few private universities, gives the town a modest academic pulse and a trickle of visiting parents needing beds.
The parish church, Stowe Landscape Gardens nearby, and a compact centre of Georgian and Victorian buildings make it a pleasant enough stop, but be honest: there's little to hold visitors for more than a night, and this is a base for exploring Stowe or the surrounding countryside rather than a destination in itself. Stay centrally, within walking distance of the town centre, to make the most of the limited dining options without needing a car.
