Hotels in Cáceres

Cáceres is one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance old towns in Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage walled quarter of honey-coloured stone where Moorish towers, noble palaces and church belfries crowded with nesting storks have survived largely untouched by modern development. That intact skyline is why film crews keep coming, most famously for Game of Thrones. The food is a serious draw too: this is Extremadura, home of acorn-fed ibérico ham and the gooey, pungent Torta del Casar sheep's cheese, and the city has a reputation for eating far above its size.

Be honest: getting here is a chore. Rail links across Extremadura are notoriously slow, there's no major airport nearby, and most visitors arrive by car from Madrid or Seville. Summers are fiercely hot, and outside the monumental centre the modern city is pleasant but unremarkable. Stay in or just outside the old walls near the Plaza Mayor, so you can walk the lit-up lanes at night after the day-trippers have gone.
