Cartagena is one of Spain's oldest cities, founded by the Carthaginians and later a major Roman naval base, and the archaeology still shows: a restored Roman theatre sits right in the historic centre, alongside a modernist port and one of the country's most decorated naval museums. It remains a working military and commercial port, which gives it a grittier, less polished feel than the tourist towns further up the coast, and the old town empties out considerably outside cruise-ship days.
The Modernista architecture around Calle Mayor is genuinely excellent and underrated compared to Cartagena's more famous namesake in Colombia. Be honest: there isn't much of a beach scene in the city itself, so travellers chasing sand should look to nearby La Manga instead. Region of Murcia International Airport is a short drive away, making it a convenient base. Stay in the historic centre near the port, where the theatre, museums and restaurants are all within walking distance.
