Castelló de la Plana is the administrative capital of its province, a mid-sized Valencian city best known locally for the Magdalena festival each March and for the leaning Fadrí bell tower that anchors its old quarter. It sits a few kilometres inland from its own beach and working port, El Grau, which gives it a split personality: a fairly ordinary provincial city centre with a university crowd, and a separate seafront strip of promenades and chiringuitos that fills up with Spanish holidaymakers in summer.

The wider area, part of the Costa del Azahar, is named for the orange blossom that scents the surrounding groves, and citrus and ceramics remain real local industries rather than tourist dressing. Be honest: this isn't a headline Spanish city break, and outside festival dates or peak summer it can feel quiet, with limited nightlife and a small hotel scene reflected in our modest eight-property listing here.
