Castries has burned down four times, in 1796, 1813, 1927 and 1948, which is why almost nothing colonial-era survives and the centre is workaday concrete rather than picture-postcard. Derek Walcott Square, named for the Nobel Prize-winning poet whose work was shaped by the last great fire, anchors a compact downtown walkable in under two hours, with Castries Market close by and the cruise terminals of Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage doing most of the retail trade.

Be honest: there is no real beach here, and this is a cruise-port capital built for ship days rather than a holiday base, so most visitors head an hour south to the Pitons or north to Rodney Bay instead. Stay in Rodney Bay, twenty-five minutes north, for Reduit Beach and the island's densest cluster of restaurants and hotels.
