Staying in Cervia
Cervia is a small Adriatic town in Romagna that built its identity on salt long before beach tourism arrived. Its saltpans, worked since antiquity and still producing the mild "sweet salt" prized by local cooks, sit just inland, with the old salt warehouses now restored along the canal in the centre. The coast is classic Romagna: a long, flat, sandy beach lined with rented umbrellas and sunbeds in tight ranks, shallow and safe for children but crowded in August with Italian families.
Be honest: the Adriatic here is calm rather than crystalline, and outside summer much of the resort strip goes quiet. Neighbouring Milano Marittima, laid out as a garden city among pine woods in the early twentieth century, is the glossier half, with boutique shopping and a lively nightlife scene. Ravenna's Byzantine mosaics are a short trip north. Stay in Milano Marittima for shade, restaurants and evening buzz, or in central Cervia near the canal for a calmer, more local base close to the saltpans.
