Chagny sits at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, the point where Burgundy's grand-cru vineyard slopes give way to the flatter Côte Chalonnaise, which makes it a sensible base for wine touring without the inflated Beaune prices. The town itself is small and modest, built around a workaday centre rather than any great monument, and its reputation rests almost entirely on food and wine rather than sightseeing.

That reputation is real: Chagny has long punched above its weight gastronomically, with a well-known high-end restaurant-with-rooms anchoring its name on the culinary map. Be honest: outside of eating and drinking, there isn't much to fill a day here, and the town can feel sleepy once the shops close. Its rail link on the Paris-Lyon line and proximity to Beaune, Mercurey and Rully make it more useful as a touring base than a destination in itself. Stay centrally, near the station, so you can reach vineyards by day and walk back for dinner without needing a car.
