Staying in Chorley

Chorley is a modest Lancashire market town rather than a destination in its own right, best known for the Chorley cake, a flat currant-filled pastry, and as the birthplace of sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate Gallery fame. Its long-running markets, including the open-air Flat Iron, still anchor the town centre, and Astley Hall, an Elizabethan house set in a large public park, is the main historic sight.

Football fans heading to Bolton Wanderers at the Toughsheet Community Stadium will also find it a practical base. The town centre is functional rather than charming, and evenings are quiet, with dining and nightlife a long way behind Manchester or Preston. Stay in the town centre near the railway station for walkable access to the markets and direct trains to Manchester and Preston.
