Cochin, officially Kochi, is Kerala's commercial capital and one of India's oldest trading ports, shaped by centuries of Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British merchants who came for pepper and spice. That layered history is most visible in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, where you'll find the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, the Dutch Palace, the Paradesi Synagogue and lanes of old godowns now turned into cafés and galleries.

The city is also the main launch point for the Kerala backwaters and hosts the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, which has given it a genuine contemporary art scene. Mainland Ernakulam is a congested, sprawling business city with heavy traffic and little charm, and the monsoon months bring humidity and relentless rain. The beaches here are not swimming beaches, so don't come expecting Goa. Stay in Fort Kochi for walkable heritage streets, homestays and the harbour atmosphere, or in Ernakulam only if you need quick access to the railway stations, business district or shopping.
