Staying in Costa Calma
Costa Calma sits on Fuerteventura's Jandía peninsula, a resort town built almost entirely for tourism rather than grown from any historic settlement, which shows in its population of under 6,000 against a strip of hotels and apartment complexes. It exists because of the beach: long, pale sand backed by low dunes, running toward Playa de Sotavento, one of the world's best-known windsurfing and kitesurfing spots and host to international competitions.
Wind is the defining feature here, welcome if you're on a board, less so if you just want to lie still on a sunbed on a breezy afternoon. Be honest: there's little in the way of old-town charm, local culture or nightlife beyond hotel bars and a few restaurants strung along the main road, so this is a destination for beach and watersports, not sightseeing. Stay as close to Playa de Sotavento as possible if you're here for the wind sports, since that's the whole point of the town.
