Staying in Dumfries

Dumfries is the main town of south-west Scotland, a red-sandstone market town on the River Nith long nicknamed the Queen of the South. Its real claim is Robert Burns, who spent his final years here. You can visit the house where he died, his mausoleum in St Michael's churchyard, and the Globe Inn, where he drank. J. M. Barrie went to school in town, and the garden of Moat Brae is credited with inspiring Peter Pan.

The old Devorgilla Bridge across the Nith is worth the short walk. The town centre feels tired in places, with a struggling high street and quiet evenings, and the riverside Whitesands area is prone to flooding. Most visitors use Dumfries as a base for the Solway coast rather than a destination in itself, and a car helps. Stay in the central streets near the river so the Burns sites, pubs and bridge are all within walking distance.
