Staying in El Rompido
El Rompido is a small fishing village in the municipality of Cartaya, on Huelva's Costa de la Luz, and its whole appeal comes down to geography: it sits on the estuary of the Río Piedras, facing the Flecha del Rompido, a long protected sandspit that separates the river from the Atlantic. Small boats shuttle visitors across to the Flecha's undeveloped beaches, which are wild, dune-backed and far emptier than anything on the Mediterranean coasts.
Back in the village there's a working harbour, a lighthouse, a marina and seafood restaurants doing straightforward fried fish and Huelva prawns, plus golf just inland that brings in a steady out-of-season crowd. Be honest: it's quiet to the point of sleepy outside summer, then fills up with Spanish families in July and August, and with almost no public transport you'll want a car, since Seville airport is a good drive away. Stay close to the harbour and riverfront if you want to walk to restaurants and the Flecha boats, or near the golf course if you're there to play and value space over village life.
