Ellesmere is a small Shropshire market town close to the Welsh border, and its whole identity is water. The Mere, the largest of the glacial lakes that give this corner of the county its "Shropshire Lake District" nickname, sits right at the edge of town, with herons, rowing boats and a lakeside walk past the old castle mound.
The Llangollen Canal curves through as well, and Ellesmere's wharf is a popular stop for narrowboat holidaymakers heading west toward Chirk and its aqueduct. With only a small number of hotels in town, stay near the Mere or the canal wharf for the walks and scenery that are the real reason to come.
