Fagagna sits in the Friuli countryside west of Udine, a walled medieval hilltown better known to Italians than to foreign tourists, which is part of its appeal. The old centre climbs to a ruined castle and the Chiesa di Santa Maria, with views out over the Friulian plain toward the Alps on a clear day, and the town runs a genuinely good stork and wetland reserve (Oasi dei Quadris) that draws birdwatchers and families rather than sightseers ticking off monuments.

Be honest: there's little in the way of nightlife or big-name attractions, and this is a base for exploring rural Friuli — Udine's food and wine, the hill towns, the Collio vineyards — rather than a destination that fills more than a day on its own.
