Gandia is really two towns wearing one name: the old inland city, once seat of the Borja (Borgia) dukes and still holding a ducal palace worth a look, and Gandia Playa, the beach extension three kilometres away where almost all visitors actually stay. The sand is wide, flat and genuinely good — a big draw for Spanish and Valencian families rather than international package tourists, which keeps prices reasonable and the vibe unpretentious.

Be honest: the inland city itself has little to detain you for more than an afternoon, and outside July and August the beachfront can feel half-shuttered and sleepy. It's well served by train from Valencia, making it an easy day trip or a low-key base rather than a destination with much nightlife or culture beyond its beach. With only 13 hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book early for peak summer weeks. Stay in Gandia Playa, right on the seafront, since that's where the beach, restaurants and promenade life actually happen.
