Staying in Giardini-Naxos
Giardini-Naxos is where Greek Sicily began: the Chalcidians founded Naxos on the Capo Schisò headland in 734 BC, the island's first Greek colony, and the excavated remains and small archaeological museum are still there at the southern end of the bay. Today it works mostly as Taormina's beach town, a long, flat seafront strip below the hilltop resort, with Etna looming to the south on clear days.
It's cheaper, easier and more relaxed than staying up the hill, and the lungomare is good for an evening passeggiata and a plate of fried fish. Be honest: the beaches are largely dark volcanic sand and pebbles rather than soft white sand, much of the waterfront is built-up and functional, and July and August bring crowds and traffic while winter can feel shuttered and quiet. Stay along the central seafront between the old harbour and Capo Schisò, where you can walk to the beach, restaurants and the buses up to Taormina.
