Hotels in Great Dunmow

Great Dunmow is a small Essex market town best known these days for its proximity to Stansted Airport, a few miles up the road, rather than for any great draw of its own. It has a genuine market-town core with timber-framed buildings and a decent pub scene, and it gives its name to the Dunmow Flitch Trials, an ancient and slightly absurd custom in which couples prove their marital harmony to win a side of bacon.

History-minded visitors sometimes use it as a base for Greensted Church nearby, reputedly the oldest wooden church in the world. This is not a destination in itself, and most people passing through are here for an early flight or a stopover rather than the town's own charms. Stay in the town centre if you want easy access to pubs and restaurants on foot; pick something closer to Stansted itself if a pre-flight night's sleep is all you actually need.
