Staying in Handa
Handa is a working industrial town on the Chita Peninsula south of Nagoya, and its identity is tied to fermentation: this is where Mizkan began making vinegar in the early nineteenth century, and the black-walled storehouses along the Handa Canal still give the old brewing district a handsome, slightly austere character. The Mizkan Museum and local sake breweries anchor a visit, and the town is also the birthplace of Niimi Nankichi, author of the children's classic Gongitsune, whose hometown area along the Yaba River turns red with spider lilies in early autumn.
The Handa Dashi Matsuri, held only once every five years, brings out dozens of ornate festival floats. Outside those sights Handa is quiet and functional, with little nightlife, and most travellers see it as a day trip from Nagoya. Our small selection of seven hotels reflects that, though Chubu Centrair Airport is close. Stay near Chita-Handa Station for direct Meitetsu trains to Nagoya and an easy walk to the canal district.
