Huesca is the provincial capital that tourism forgot in favour of Jaca and the Pyrenean ski towns further north, which is precisely its appeal if you want a working Aragonese city rather than a resort. The old town centres on the Gothic cathedral and the Plaza de la Catedral, with the San Pedro el Viejo cloister among the best-preserved Romanesque work in the region; the Museo de Huesca fills in the rest, including the grim medieval legend of the "Bell of Huesca".
Tapas bars around Plaza Luis López and Casco Viejo turn lively at night on a scale disproportionate to the town's size. Be honest: there's little to fill more than a day or two, and it functions mainly as a stop-off before Ordesa y Monte Perdido or the Somontano wine country rather than a destination in itself. With only five hotels listed, choice is limited, so book ahead in summer. Stay in the old town near the cathedral, within walking distance of everything that matters here.
