Islamabad is Pakistan's purpose-built capital, laid out in the nineteen-sixties to a Greek planner's grid of lettered and numbered sectors at the foot of the Margalla Hills. The result is the country's greenest, calmest and most orderly city, with wide avenues, leafy residential blocks and hiking trails that start almost at the edge of town. Its landmarks are modern rather than ancient: the vast Faisal Mosque, the petal-shaped Pakistan Monument, and the Daman-e-Koh viewpoint looking back over the city.
Be honest: it can feel spread out and a little sterile, with little of the street life or historic texture of Lahore or neighbouring Rawalpindi, and you will need taxis or ride-hailing to get between sectors. Security checkpoints are a routine part of moving around, especially near government buildings and the Diplomatic Enclave. Stay in sectors F-6 or F-7, around Jinnah Super and Kohsar Market, for walkable cafés and restaurants and quick access to the Margalla trails.
