Staying in Kathmandu
Kathmandu is intense — dusty, traffic-snarled and load-bearing for every Himalayan trip — and still one of the most atmospheric capitals anywhere. Boudhanath's great white stupa circled by pilgrims at dusk, the monkey-guarded hilltop of Swayambhunath, and the carved temples of the Durbar Squares (some still under restoration from the 2015 earthquake) are extraordinary.
Thamel is the trekking bazaar: gear shops, bakeries and agencies stacked ten deep, convenient and touristy in equal measure. Air quality is genuinely poor; a mask helps. Stay in Thamel for the practical pre-trek base, or in Patan or near Boudhanath for quieter, more traditional surroundings — accepting a taxi ride into the tourist infrastructure when you need it.
