Kirishima is volcano-and-hot-spring country in northern Kagoshima Prefecture, a municipality stretching from the lowlands around Kokubu up into the Kirishima mountain range, where steam vents, crater lakes and sulphur-smelling onsen towns define the landscape. Its spiritual anchor is Kirishima-jingu, a vermilion shrine in cedar forest tied to the myth of Ninigi descending to earth on nearby Takachiho-no-mine. History buffs know the area as where Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo took what is often called Japan's first honeymoon, soaking in local springs.
Hikers come for the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park trails and the Ebino Plateau. This is a spread-out, rural place where buses are infrequent and a car makes a big difference, and volcanic activity at peaks like Shinmoedake can close trails at short notice. The upside is that Kagoshima Airport sits within the city itself. Stay in the Kirishima Onsen village area for ryokan-style bathing and easy access to the shrine and mountain trails.
