Staying in Kitakyushu
Kitakyushu is northern Kyushu's working city, a sprawl formed in 1963 by merging five older towns, Moji, Kokura, Yahata, Tobata and Wakamatsu, into one industrial municipality of around a million people. Its identity was forged in steel: the Yawata works helped launch Japan's industrial age and is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and the city later became known for cleaning up the severe pollution that heavy industry left behind.
Visitors come for the reconstructed Kokura Castle, the covered Tanga Market and the Mojiko Retro district, where restored Meiji and Taisho-era buildings face the Kanmon Strait and Shimonoseki across the water. This is not a classic sightseeing city. It is spread out, industrial in places, and most travellers treat it as a stopover on the way to Fukuoka, which has more energy and better nightlife. Kitakyushu Airport, on an offshore island, offers a handy alternative gateway. Stay near Kokura Station for shinkansen access, the castle, the market and the widest choice of restaurants.
