La Manga del Mar Menor is a strip of a resort, quite literally: a narrow sand spit built up with high-rise apartment blocks running between two very different seas, the calm, shallow Mar Menor lagoon on one side and the open Mediterranean surf on the other. That geography is the whole appeal — you can swim warm, still, saline water in the morning and proper waves in the afternoon without moving far.
It was developed fast from the nineteen-sixties onward for Spanish and northern European sun-seekers, and the architecture shows it: dense, functional tower blocks rather than anything picturesque. Be honest: this is a package-holiday and second-home destination, not a place with historic character, and it can feel deserted and half-shuttered outside the summer months. Watersports, golf courses inland, and long beaches are the draw. Stay on the Mar Menor side if you want calmer water and better sunset views over the lagoon.
