Staying in Letojanni
Letojanni is a small former fishing town on Sicily's Ionian coast, a few kilometres north of Taormina, and most people who stay here do so because it is a calmer, more affordable base than its famous neighbour on the hill. The town itself is modest: a long seafront promenade, a beach of coarse grey sand and pebbles, and a cluster of seafood restaurants that draw diners from Taormina in the evenings. It sits on the Messina–Catania railway, and frequent buses make Taormina, Giardini Naxos and day trips toward Etna straightforward without a car.
Be honest: there is not much to see or do in Letojanni beyond the beach and the meals, the shoreline is not soft and sandy, and outside the summer months many places close and the town goes very quiet, while August brings crowds of Italian holidaymakers. With only a handful of hotels, choice is limited, so book ahead in peak season. Stay along or just behind the seafront promenade, close to the station, for beach access, restaurants and easy connections to Taormina.
