Llandudno is the largest seaside resort in Wales, built deliberately in the Victorian era around a long curving bay between the Great Orme and Little Orme headlands, and it still looks the part: a mile-plus promenade lined with pastel-painted terraces and one of Britain's best-preserved cast-iron piers. It markets itself as the "Queen of Welsh Resorts," and the architecture backs that up, but be honest: this is a traditional bucket-and-spade town, not a design destination, with an older, more sedate crowd than you'd find on the Spanish costas.

The pebbly-sandy beach is decent rather than spectacular, and the Great Orme tramway and cable car are the main event beyond the seafront. Conwy Castle and the Smallest House in Great Britain are close enough for easy half-day trips. With only eight hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book early in summer. Stay on the North Shore promenade for sea views and walkable access to the pier and Great Orme.
