Llanes sits on Asturias' northern coast, a working fishing port turned low-key beach town, best known for its cliffside coves, the blowhole rock formations called bufones that shoot spray into the air at high tide, and the harbour breakwater blocks painted by Basque sculptor Agustín Ibarrola in bold primary colours. The old town still has stretches of medieval wall and narrow lanes, and the surrounding countryside is proper green Asturias — hills, cider orchards, and a much wetter climate than the Mediterranean coast, so pack for rain even in summer.
