Staying in Lockerbie
Lockerbie is a small Annandale market town in Dumfries and Galloway whose name the world learned for the worst possible reason: the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed everyone on board and eleven residents on the ground. The town handles that history with quiet dignity, and the Garden of Remembrance at Dryfesdale Cemetery is a moving, understated place to visit. Beyond that, Lockerbie itself offers little to linger over, just a modest high street of red sandstone buildings, a few pubs and everyday shops.
Its real value is position. It sits right on the M74 and has a station on the West Coast Main Line, so it makes a practical overnight stop between England and Glasgow or Edinburgh, and a cheaper base for exploring southwest Scotland. Stay in the town centre near the station and high street, so you can walk to dinner and catch an early train or get straight back onto the motorway.
