Macclesfield sits on the edge of the Peak District in Cheshire, a former silk-milling town that's traded spinning sheds for a mix of market-town streets and commuter housing. The steep cobbled Market Place and the old silk mills (several now converted or housing small museums) give it more character than the average dormitory town, and it's a genuine gateway for walkers heading into the Peaks rather than a destination in its own right.
Be honest: there isn't a huge amount to fill a weekend here, and evenings are quiet outside a handful of pubs and restaurants. Its real advantage is location — close to Manchester Airport for early flights, within easy reach of Wilmslow and the Cheshire countryside, and a short drive from Peak District walking country.
