Staying in Madgaon
Madgaon, usually called Margao, is South Goa's working commercial hub, a busy market town that runs on trade rather than tourism. It is the main stop on the Konkan Railway for Goa, so many visitors pass through without lingering. Those who do stay find a lived-in Portuguese-era centre, with the whitewashed Church of the Holy Spirit, old mansions with deep verandas, and a crowded covered market that sells everything from spices to chouriço sausage.
Be honest: this is not a beach town, the streets are congested and noisy, and evenings are quiet compared with the coastal strip. The sand at Colva and Benaulim is a short drive west, though, and Goa Dabolim International Airport is within easy reach, which makes Madgaon a practical, cheaper base for exploring the south. Choice is limited, so book ahead. Stay near the town centre around the Municipal Garden for walkable access to the market, churches and onward buses, or close to the railway station if you are arriving or leaving by train.
