Staying in Moffat
Moffat is a small Borders-edge market town in Annandale, Dumfries and Galloway, that grew rich on sheep and then fashionable as a Victorian spa, when visitors came to drink from its pungent sulphur well. The wool heritage is still marked by the bronze ram atop the Colvin Fountain on the unusually broad High Street, and the town is known for Moffat Toffee and for being Europe's first designated Dark Sky Community.
With around 2,500 residents, evenings are quiet, the choice of places to eat and stay is limited, and many people treat it as a convenient break off the M74 between England and Glasgow or Edinburgh rather than a destination. Stay on or just off the High Street, where everything in town is a short walk away.
