Staying in O Grove
O Grove sits on the Galician Rías Baixas, a fishing town built on shellfish: this is where much of Spain's mussel and oyster farming happens, and the harbour and market reflect it, with seafood restaurants that punch well above what the town's small size suggests. It's the anchor point for visiting the Illas Cíes-adjacent coastline and the calmer beaches of the O Grove peninsula and nearby A Toxa, an upscale islet connected by bridge and known for its spa hotel and casino.
Be honest: outside summer and the October seafood festival, O Grove is quiet to the point of shuttered, and the town itself is more workaday harbour than pretty postcard — the appeal is the food and the coastline, not architecture. Traffic and crowds spike hard in August. Stay on or near A Toxa if you want resort comforts and sea views, or in central O Grove for easy access to the market and cheaper seafood dinners.
