Hotels in Palamós

Palamós is a working fishing town on the Costa Brava, and it still feels like one. Its fleet heads out daily and the catch is auctioned on the quayside. The town's fame rests on the gamba de Palamós, a deep-red prawn that Catalan chefs treat with near-religious respect and that commands serious prices on local menus. The Museu de la Pesca by the harbour explains the trade better than most such museums manage. Beyond town, the coast improves quickly.

La Fosca is a sheltered sandy bay, and the coastal path north leads to Cala S'Alguer, with its cluster of old fishermen's huts, and the undeveloped Platja del Castell. Be honest: the main town beach is ordinary, the seafront has its share of bland apartment blocks, and July and August bring heavy crowds and tight parking. It is better treated as a base for food and coastal walks than as a pure beach resort. Stay near the harbour and old town for restaurants and evening life, or around La Fosca for a calmer beach-focused stay within walking distance of the coves.
