Staying in Patrington
Patrington is a small village of around 1,500 people in Holderness, the flat, wind-scoured corner of the East Riding of Yorkshire between Hull and the North Sea, and it punches far above its size thanks to one building. St Patrick's Church, nicknamed the Queen of Holderness, is a soaring Decorated Gothic masterpiece often ranked among the finest parish churches in England, its slender spire visible for miles across the fields. Beyond that, the appeal is the surrounding landscape: the Humber estuary and the long, shifting shingle spit of Spurn Point, a nature reserve prized by birdwatchers during migration season.
There is very little to do here after dark, dining options are limited, public transport is sparse, and the countryside is more bleakly atmospheric than pretty, so a car makes life much easier. With only a handful of places to stay, this is a base for church enthusiasts, walkers and birders rather than a destination in itself. Stay in the village centre near St Patrick's for easy access to the pubs and a straightforward drive out to Spurn.
