Ponta Delgada is the main city of the Azores and the gateway to São Miguel, the archipelago's largest island, so most visitors pass through here whether they plan to or not. The historic centre is handsome and compact, built in whitewash trimmed with dark volcanic basalt, with the three arches of the Portas da Cidade facing a busy marina and seafront promenade. It is also a working base. Whale-watching boats leave from the harbour, the island's greenhouse pineapple plantations sit on the edge of town, and the crater lakes of Sete Cidades and the hot springs of Furnas are an easy day trip.

The city itself is small and quickly seen, its waterfront is rocky rather than sandy, and Atlantic weather can turn grey and wet in any season, so plan for a car and flexible days rather than a beach holiday. João Paulo II Airport is just a short hop from town. Stay in the historic centre near the marina, where restaurants, boat departures and the old streets are all within walking distance.
