Staying in Puigcerdà
Puigcerda was founded around 1177 as capital of the Cerdanya, the high Pyrenean valley split between Spain and France, and the border still runs right past it: the Spanish town of Llivia sits a few kilometres away, cut off inside French territory since the Treaty of the Pyrenees ceded surrounding villages to France in 1659 but let Llivia keep its Spanish status as a town rather than a village.
Puigcerda itself was besieged and taken by French troops more than once in the decades before that treaty. L'Estany, the town's artificial lake, is over six hundred years old and was built for irrigation before becoming the social heart of town. It's a small border town built around summer and ski-season trade, so options thin out well outside those months. Stay in the centre near L'Estany for walkable access to the old town and the lake.
