Rawalpindi is the older, louder half of Pakistan's twin cities, a garrison town that has housed the army's General Headquarters since independence and still carries a cantonment's mix of orderly military enclaves and dense, chaotic bazaars. Where neighbouring Islamabad is planned and green, Pindi, as everyone calls it, is the place for Raja Bazaar's cloth and spice lanes, roadside chapli kebabs and the general hum of a working city of around 1.7 million.
It has political weight too: Liaquat Bagh is where Pakistan's first prime minister was shot in 1951 and Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Be honest: traffic is relentless, air quality is often poor, and there are few conventional sights beyond the markets. Its real value is as a base, with the Metrobus running into Islamabad, the international airport nearby and the hill station of Murree within driving range. Stay in Saddar for walkable restaurants and the easiest access to both the old bazaars and the Islamabad Metrobus.
