Roquetas de Mar sits on the Almeria coast, a purpose-built resort town that grew fast from a small fishing settlement once the greenhouses and package tourism arrived. It's known today for long sandy beaches, a marina, and a climate drier and sunnier than almost anywhere else in mainland Spain, which is the main reason people come.

Be honest: much of the town is modern, low-rise apartment blocks and resort infrastructure rather than historic charm, and the surrounding plastic greenhouses that supply Europe's supermarkets are visible on the approach roads and don't photograph well. The old fishing quarter and lighthouse area still give a sense of what preceded the tourist boom, and the beachfront promenade is genuinely long and well kept. Stay near the marina or the main beachfront promenade for easy access to restaurants and the sea without needing a car.
