Roses sits on the Costa Brava at the northern end of the Bay of Roses, a Catalan fishing town turned family beach resort with a long sandy shoreline and a marina full of leisure boats. Its real claim to fame is proximity, not the town itself: the ruins of the Greek and Roman settlement of Empúries and the medieval Citadel give it some genuine history, and it's the closest coastal base for the Cap de Creus natural park's jagged coves, plus a manageable drive to Salvador Dalí's house in Portlligat.

Be honest: Roses is busy and built-up in summer, with plenty of generic apartment blocks and a strip of chain-restaurant tourism that lacks the charm of Cadaqués just up the coast. The old town retains some fishing-village character around the port, but this is a resort first. With only 9 hotels listed here, options are limited, so book early for July and August. Stay near the seafront promenade for beach access and easy walks into the old town.
