Saint-Vith sits in Belgium's German-speaking East Cantons, close enough to the language border that shopfronts and menus switch fluidly between French and German. It's a low-key market town best known outside the region for the Battle of the Bulge, during which it was largely flattened and later rebuilt, so the old-town look is more reconstruction than genuine medieval charm. Most visitors come for the surrounding Ardennes countryside — walking, cycling and cross-country skiing when snow allows — rather than the town itself, which empties out fast once shops close.
