Sanlucar de Barrameda sits where the Guadalquivir river meets the Atlantic, opposite the marshes of Donana National Park, and is built almost entirely around manzanilla, the salt-tinged sherry that only properly ages here by the sea air. Every August the town runs official beach horse races along a two-kilometre stretch of sand, a tradition dating to 1845 and reckoned Spain's oldest regulated race meeting.

Bodega tours and manzanilla tastings are the main daytime activity, alongside boat trips into Donana's wetlands to spot flamingos. It is a working town rather than a polished resort, so nightlife and English menus are thinner than on the Costa del Sol. Stay near the Barrio Bajo by the river for the bodegas and the fish restaurants using the daily catch.
