Sant Lluís sits in southeastern Menorca, a whitewashed inland town built by the French during their brief eighteenth-century occupation of the island, which explains the tidy, symmetrical streets rather than any typical Spanish layout. It's small, with under six thousand residents, and functions more as a base than a destination in itself: the real draw is the cluster of coves nearby, including Punta Prima, Alcaufar and Binisafúller, with their calm, shallow water and pale sand.

Be honest: the town centre itself is modest, a working windmill and some handsome houses, but little in the way of sights to fill a day, and evenings are quiet compared with Menorca's livelier resorts. Its proximity to Menorca Airport is the main practical advantage, making it a sensible first or last stop on the island rather than somewhere to linger. With only ten hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book early in summer. Stay near the coves south of town if you want beach access on foot; stay closer to the centre if you'd rather be near the airport with minimal driving.
