Staying in Siem Reap
Siem Reap exists almost entirely as the gateway to Angkor: without the temples on its doorstep this would be a modest Cambodian provincial town, and with them it's become one of Southeast Asia's biggest single-purpose tourist bases. The town itself has grown fast and somewhat chaotically to meet demand, with Pub Street and the Night Market catering to the after-dark crowd once the ruins close, and a French-colonial old quarter along the river that's more genuinely pleasant to walk than the tourist strip suggests.
Much of Siem Reap is built for a one-to-three-night stopover rather than lingering, and outside the temple complex and a handful of good restaurants there isn't a huge amount to hold you. Angkor Wat and the wider Angkor park are the reason to come, and they're worth every bit of the hype, best tackled early morning before heat and crowds set in. Stay near the old town or riverside rather than out by the main road strips, so you're close to decent food and within easy tuk-tuk range of the temples.
