Sintra is where Portugal's kings and nineteenth-century romantics came to escape Lisbon's summer heat, and they left behind one of Europe's most extravagant hill landscapes, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The headline is the candy-coloured Pena Palace on its ridge, but the Moorish Castle walls, the mystical wells and grottoes of Quinta da Regaleira, the gardens of Monserrate and the National Palace with its giant conical chimneys make a strong case for more than one day.
Lord Byron called it a "glorious Eden," and the misty, forested hills still feel noticeably cooler and greener than the coast below. It is one of the most popular day trips from Lisbon, so midday crowds, tour coaches, steep lanes and scarce parking can sour the experience. Staying overnight also puts Belém's monuments within a short drive. Stay in the historic centre, Sintra Vila, so you can walk to the palaces early and enjoy the evenings after the day-trippers leave.
