Hotels in Sofia

Sofia is a Balkan capital that wears its layers openly: Roman Serdica ruins sit exposed beside metro entrances, Ottoman mosques and a synagogue share the centre with Orthodox churches, and the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral anchors it all. The real treasure lies just outside town, where the small Boyana Church holds medieval frescoes that earned it UNESCO listing. Mount Vitosha rises directly behind the city, so serious hiking or winter skiing is a short ride from downtown, a rare luxury for a European capital.

Be honest: much of Sofia is grey communist-era housing blocks, pavements are often cracked, winter smog can be unpleasant, and visitors expecting the old-town charm of Plovdiv may find it workmanlike. It is, however, good value, easy to navigate, and linked to Sofia Airport by metro. Stay in the centre around Vitosha Boulevard and the cathedral, where the main sights, restaurants and metro lines are all within walking distance.
