Staying in Stockholm
Stockholm is a capital built across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and water is never far from view. The medieval lanes of Gamla Stan, crowned by the Royal Palace, are the postcard core, while Djurgården holds the Vasa Museum, home to a salvaged seventeenth-century warship and easily the city's most memorable sight. Södermalm supplies the cafés, vintage shops and evening bars, and boats run out to the archipelago and to Drottningholm Palace, the royal family's UNESCO-listed residence on Lake Mälaren.
Stockholm is expensive, with eating out and drinking costing noticeably more than in most European capitals. Winters are dark by mid-afternoon, and Gamla Stan's main streets fill with souvenir shops and cruise crowds in summer. Public transport is excellent, though, and the Arlanda Express delivers you straight to Stockholm Central. Stay in Norrmalm near Stockholm Central for the easiest airport and rail connections, or on Södermalm for a more lived-in neighbourhood feel within walking distance of the old town.
