Suances is a modest fishing town on Spain's Cantabrian coast, more low-key beach resort for Spanish families than international destination. It has a clutch of good beaches — Playa de la Concha and Playa del Rosal among them — backed by cliffs and dunes rather than promenades and high-rises, which keeps the pace slow and the crowds mostly domestic. The old harbour and estuary give it a working-town feel that separates it from the more polished resorts further along the coast.
Be honest: outside July and August it can feel sleepy to the point of shut, with limited nightlife and a short season for restaurants and shops. The Cave of Altacosa nearby is worth the detour if you want prehistoric art without the crowds of the bigger Cantabrian caves.
