Staying in Taormina
Taormina sits on a clifftop terrace above Sicily's east coast, and it trades on exactly that view: Mount Etna smoking away to the south, the sea dropping off on both sides, and a Greek theatre still used for concerts and film festivals that frames the whole scene like a stage set. The medieval centre, all Corso Umberto shops and stone piazzas, is genuinely beautiful, but it is also small — a population under six thousand swells enormously with day-trippers bussed up from cruise ships in Messina and Catania, and by August the main street is a shuffling crowd rather than a stroll.
This is a place built for tourism now, with prices to match, and the best beaches (Isola Bella, Mazzaro) are reached by cable car or a steep walk down, not steps from town. It's an easy base for Etna and Syracuse day trips, though, if you don't mind the crowds. Stay in the historic centre near Corso Umberto for the views and walkability, and expect to pay for both.
