Staying in Tarifa
Tarifa is mainland Europe's southernmost town, sitting where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean with Morocco's Rif mountains plainly visible across the Strait of Gibraltar. It is best known as the kitesurfing and windsurfing capital of Europe, thanks to the relentless levante and poniente winds that funnel through the strait. Those winds are also its main drawback. Be honest: on a strong levante day the beach is a sandblaster, and anyone hoping for a calm sunbathing holiday may spend more time indoors than planned.
The compact old town, walled and whitewashed around the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, has a relaxed, surfy energy with good tapas bars and a younger crowd than most Andalusian resorts. Long, undeveloped beaches like Los Lances and nearby Valdevaqueros stay refreshingly free of high-rise blocks. Ferries run from the port to Tangier, making a day trip to Morocco easy. Stay in or just outside the old town for walkable restaurants and ferry access, or along Los Lances if you're there mainly for the water.
